As part of the Center for Energy Workforce Development’s strategic partnership with CSMlearn, three CEWD member companies participated in pilot programs in the first half of 2019. CEWD and CSMlearn have released a report with preliminary results from the pilots, and which gives suggestions for future expansion of CSM through the energy industry.
As a strategic partner, CEWD recommends the CSM Course and High Performance Certificate as a tool to develop a diverse, qualified workforce pipeline, specifically the target audiences that are part of CEWD’s Get Into Energy Career Pathways for Skilled Energy Technicians. These audiences include youth, low-income young adults, women, military members, and transitioning workers. Ann Radazzon, Executive Director of CEWD, commented, “I think anyone looking at the CSM Course would immediately see that these skills are the same ones the energy industry is looking for. We were excited to finds so many of them included in one course and that results in a credential of value to our industry.”

What are the foundational skills that any employee needs to succeed, regardless of where they work, what position they hold, or what functions they perform?
To answer this question, the National Network consulted with employer representatives from the major economic sectors to identify the core skills that they need in their employees. They created the Common Employability Skills Framework, which details the personal skills, people skills, workplace skills, and applied knowledge that are universal and fundamental to employee success.
Valerie Taylor, lead author of the Common Employability Skills Framework, notes that "The CSM High Performance course and certificate addresses a core set of the Common Employability Skills that is directly linked to high performance on the job. It focuses on individuals being their personal best: Caring about what they do, pushing through failure, having high expectations for themselves and following through."
The National Network represents major business sectors and is funded through a collaborative partnership of Business Roundtable (BRT), ACT Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, Lumina Foundation, and Walmart Foundation. Members include leaders in the manufacturing, retail, health care, energy, construction, hospitality, transportation, and information technology sectors.

We've built a new online training course for CSM coaches – and it's FREE!
Our new High Performance Coaching course teaches the best practices for coaching students on CSM, and empowers coaches to assist students while utilizing all of the tools that CSM has to offer. Coaches play a key role in student success on CSM, shortening time to completion and increasing engagement.
High Performance Coaching has special lessons interspersed between the first few skills on CSM, and covers topics such as the role of coaches, the coaching Toolkit, effective communication with students, and more. Coaches learn firsthand what CSM feels like from the perspective of a student, what resources they have available to learn, and hopefully also gain some empathy for students, as they might find their first few hours on CSM very challenging.
To check coaches' understanding of the material, each lesson has a short number of questions to answer, and some require a short written response. Our Expert Coaches will review each coaches' responses and work with them to improve their answers so they can have a sophisticated understanding of the material.
We offer a certificate for 3 clock hours of professional development for coaches at educational institutions.
Get started today by logging into your Toolkit and selecting Go to Your Student Account in the menu.

CSMlearn is proud to be a Certified B Corp®, and is even more excited to be named a 2018 Best For The World honoree! We earned this honor by scoring in the top 10th percentile of all Certified B Corporations in the Customer portion of the B Impact Assessment. To be a Certified B Corp, CSMlearn had to pass a rigorous assessment to ensure that we meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.
This assessment "measures the impact a company has on its customers by focusing on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit and if those products/services are targeted toward serving underserved populations. The section also measures whether a company’s product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (improving health, preserving the environment, creating economic opportunity for individuals or communities, promoting the arts/sciences, or increasing the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises)." David Goldberg to present on "An Innovative, Practical Strategy for Workforce Transformation" at the Drive|Lead|Suceed Conference
Join David Goldberg for his plenary session Friday, October 26th at 10:50am at the Economic Development Council of Colorado's Drive|Lead|Succeed Conference in Estes Park, CO. The description of his talk is below.
An Innovative, Practical Strategy for Workforce Transformation
Communities’ long-term economic prospects depend heavily on their workforce, yet economic developers and other community leaders have little funding, minimal authority over education and training efforts, and few practical frameworks for improving both workforce development and the education system that feeds it. Our new approach is based on the idea that while conventional education and workforce efforts are focused on conventional academic and job-specific skills, we have found that high-performance characteristics are most important for individual success and that employers desire for all employees, across sectors, business functions and positions. This talk will describe inexpensive, scalable new tools for building high performance, which can be shared across schools, colleges, workforce development, and employers, from those with basic education to those with advanced degrees.

We are confident that CSMlearn has the potential to be transformational in bridging the education to workforce chasm that is a major contributor to gaps in opportunity, especially for lower-skilled workers."
